A checkpost in Rajasthan now runs on solar

Kuriyaberi is a relatively unheard of, small village in the Jaisalmer District of Rajasthan. Some of the areas in this village are yet to get electrified, but thanks to the Su-Kam Rajasthan team, a check-post and a temple in this area are now receiving electricity generated through solar energy. It is interesting to note how solar energy has the potential of transcending geographical and economic boundaries and bringing people closer.

On 26 December 2015, the Kuriyaberi check-post and the Dhanot temple in the same region were solarified with the help of Su-Kam’s team based in Rajasthan. Mr. M.L Sharma, who was a part of the installation team said, “There is no state supply of electricity in this area, so they decided to go solar. Now they enjoy uninterrupted electricity through off-grid set-up”.

The set-up

A Su-Kam PCU or Power conditioning unit of 2 kW, 4 batteries of 48 volt and a 2000 watt panel (8 panels of 250 watt each) were installed at the Kuriyaberi check-post. At the Dhanot temple a Su-Kam PCU of 1 kW along with 2 batteries of 150 and a 1000 watt solar panel were installed (4 panels of 250 watt each).

Su-Kam’s Solar Power Conditioning unit (PCU) is an integrated system consisting of a solar charge controller, inverter and a Grid charger. With the help of the PCU, you have the option of charging the battery bank either through solar or Grid/DG set. Due to constant usage of power, if the battery voltage goes below a set level, the PCU will automatically transfer the load to the Grid/DG power and also charge simultaneously. Once the batteries are charged to the preset level, the Su-Kam’s Solar Power Conditioning unit cuts off the Grid/DG Power from the system and restores it to feeding the loads from the battery bank while also returning to charging the battery from the available solar power.

The cost of the check-post installation was 2,25,000 INR and that of the Dhanot temple installation was 1,15,000 INR. It is just a one-time investment, because more than anything it guarantees them uninterrupted electricity and a freedom from electricity bills. A step towards the realizing the dream of a self-sufficient India!

Such incidents show that India is ready for a solar revolution, which will not only change the way this country lives but also helps in leveling inequality to a large extent.
