Why A ‘Solar’ Street Light?
Solar power has grown over the people of India for all the right reasons. This is one source of power that can light up the most remote areas of India or the world if I may add. Using solar power gives one the freedom to be independent of the grid supply bringing light into rural far-flung villages that have never seen the light of day. And this is why solar is the future.
Life inside the Cantonment Board
The agency that controls the cantonment board under the Ministry of Defense located in district Solan recently approached Su-Kam’s authorized dealer Mr. Dinesh to light up the area around the cantonment with solar street lights.
The area had no street lights because of the shortage of power supply. Electricity would be available only for a meager 3 hours every day. It became a necessity to install a standalone independent solar street light in that area. The CEO of this agency Ms. Tanu Jain brought up this topic in a board meeting one day. This aggressive young leader made a decision to install solar street lights covering the boundary of the area. She requested that the street lights being installed should be without a battery box since the area is prone to thefts.
And so Tanu and her team contacted our authorized dealer Mr. Dinesh, who is located in Solan, HP for installing 9 solar street lights in the prime locations of the cantonment board.
Here are the details of the solar street lights:
- solar street light ‘SUNWAY’ – LI3 (15W – 9 in number)
- solar panels inbuilt in the street light – 35W each
- inbuilt internal lithium ion batteries – 14.8V/5.2AH
Life after Solar Street Lights in Village Khedi
After the installation, we spoke to Ms. Tanu and she was quite impressed with the way it turned out. We then spoke to Mr. Dinesh.
He says, ‘Ms. Tanu is a motivated leader and wanted to install the solar street lights quickly. She gave us a timeline of 2 days to complete the project and we assured her the project will be completed within the expected time. After 2 days, the area was lit up with solar lights and she was quite impressed with us. She has also written us an appreciation letter for the efforts we put into this project.’
Let us understand how a solar street light works:
How A Solar Street Light Works?
Su-Kam’s solar outdoor streetlight ‘SUNWAY’ comes in three models. LI1 (4W), LI2 (9W) and LI3 (15W). The LI3 model gives 31 lux from 4 meters and provides excellent lighting for outdoor solutions like farms, small streets etc. These street lights have been designed to provide 30 to 50% more brightness as compared to other solar street light and with inbuilt light weight and maintenance free lithium ion batteries. This standalone street light consists of a pole, battery bank, solar panel and LED or CFL lights. During the day the solar panels convert the sunlight into electricity and stores it in batteries and during the night the street lights provide light by taking energy from the power stored in batteries.
The number of hours the street light stays on depends on your geographical area.
For this particular street light, Mr. Dinesh says, ‘We expect it should be able to provide 12 hours of continuous backup with approximately 8 hours of sunlight charging. The street light will work from 7 PM in the evening to 7 AM in the morning. The area receives enough sunlight so it should work just perfectly.’
