More People in Yemen Are Going Solar. But Why?

Here is a story about two brothers who recently opened a new store in Yemen and decided to ‘solarize’ their store. They spent 200 USD on diesel expenses every month. Read more to find out how much money they saved after installing a solar system!

Why was solar power their only choice?

Mohammed Al-Hubaishi and his brother recently inaugurated their new trading store in Yemen.

Yemen has tragically been facing civil wars since 2015 that resulted in the loss of lives, property and basic infrastructure. Yemen and its citizens have been living in the dark since over a year now. There is no electricity available even in the most populated cities of the country.

The two brothers stay in IBB city and struggled to run the load in their store like computers and tubelights through electricity. So they had to resort to using diesel generators. After spending 200USD every month on its expenditure and maintenance, they decided it was time for them to go solar.

For this installation, the two brothers called up Mr. Majed (From Abdullah Alezzi Trading Stores – Su-Kam’s authorized distributor in Yemen). Mr. Majed and Su-Kam have been in association for more than two and a half years. The Abdullah Alezzi Trading Stores manage and supply Su-Kam’s solar products all over Yemen. The Abdullah Alezzi Trading stores have carried out a number of solar installations across Yemen and after a detailed site inspection they came up with the following system.

Here are the details of the system installed:

Technical Specifications:

  1. Su-Kam’s Colossal Inverter – 5KVA/96V
  2. Su-Kam’s solar panels – 250W/24V (16 in number)
  3. Su-Kam’s Tubular Batteries – 200AH/12V (8 in number)
  4. Su-Kam’s solar charge controller MPPT – 48V/60Amps

Load running and units generated

This system is able to generate approximately 25 to 30 units of electricity every day depending on weather conditions. The solar panels will generate DC power that will be sent to the solar charge controller which will charge the batteries with this DC power. With the efficiency of 95% the MPPT solar charge controller ensures that maximum power is extracted from the solar panels at all times and in all weather conditions.

The power stored in these batteries will then be converter from DC to AC by the colossal inverter. The inverter will then run all of the load through this AC power. The panels generate 8amps per hour with a sunshine of approximately 8 hours.

The solar system runs the load of the store during working hours that is from 8AM to 8:30PM that includes approximately 5 Desktop computers, 1ink jet printer, 200W LED lamps. The solar system is functioning perfectly and running all required load.

We wish both the brothers many congratulations for their new store and wish them best of luck for their future with solar and hope to provide any kind of assistance they require.
