This Area in Punjab Gets Only 4 Hours of Electricity Daily. So, People Turn to Solar.

Here is a story about a man who suffered from lack of electricity lines in his area and wanted electricity to construct a new home for himself.

This Man Could Construct His Home All Thanks to Solar Power

Mr. Suresh stays in district Baltana in Punjab state of India. Baltana suffers chronic power shortage at all times. Electricity is available there for less than 4 hours on an average every day and the rest of the day is spent in darkness.


Mr. Suresh wanted to construct a new home for his family and kids to live in. He hired construction workers but struggled with lack of electricity lines. They needed two machines called cutter machines and a few lights to run on electricity for the home to be constructed.

Mr. Suresh didn’t know how to manage and then one fine day he was approached by Mr. Khan (Su-kam’s dealer in Punjab) and he suggested that he should install a solar system to run his construction machines and eventually use it to run his load at home.


Baltana district of Punjab receives approximately 10 hours and 34 minutes of day light every day in this month of December. And investing in solar power in this area would definitely be a success.

And so, Mr. Khan decided to install a solar power conditioning unit in Mr. Suresh’s home. A solar power conditioning unit is different from a regular inverter in the way that it has an inbuilt solar charge controller. That is usually externally installed in case of an existing inverter at home.

After a detailed site inspection, here is what he installed:

Units Generated and Load Running

This solar system is expected to generate approximately 8 to 10 units of electricity on a daily basis depending on weather conditions. The installation was a success.

The system is now running on solar comfortably. Solar power from this installation is used to run 2 cutter machines of 600W each. So, total of 1200W load is running on solar.

After the installation, we had a candid conversation with Mr. Khan who says, ‘We have installed Su-Kam solar PCU in Mr. Suresh’s home according to their load requirements as of now. This house is currently under construction and they required to run their machines on solar since there is an issue of electricity availability in this area. After the construction, the solar system will be used to run house load.’
