Why more and more Petrol Pumps in Jammu are Installing Solar?

‘This is my 20th solar installation for a petrol pump in Jammu in the last 2 years,’ says Siddharth. The poor electricity supply, frequent power cuts and the remoteness of petrol pumps are some of the many reasons why petrol pump owners in Jammu are turning to solar. ‘You can easily make a saving of Rs, 50,000 – 1 lac by installing an off-grid solar system instead of a diesel generator,’ explains Siddharth.

How did solar help Mr. Tickoo and this petrol pump?

Mr. Tickoo owns a petrol pump located in Jammu. This area experiences power cuts for about 6 to 8 hours per day, so to run their load comfortably, they bought a diesel generator. This petrol pump owner then paid a heavy electricity bill every month to run about 5KW load.

It was then that Mr. Tickoo’s friend suggested him to get a solar system installed in his petrol pump, assuring him that it would reduce his cost per month and for a long period of time.

Without much thought, Tickoo decided to call Mr. Siddharth, who is a Su-Kam’s authorized distributor in Jammu and asked him to install a solar system in his petrol pump.


Siddharth and his team of qualified engineers then visited Tickoo’s petrol pump and inspected their load and advised him to install an off-grid solar powered system that would run their load on solar power and also provide sufficient backup.

Indian state of Jammu receives an ample amount of sunlight. With an average of 11 hours and 30 mins of daylight, a solar installation in this winter month of February would be perfect for this area.

And so Tickoo followed Sidharth’s advice and installed the following—

Load running and units generated

This solar system generates 18 to 20 units of electricity in a day approximately according to weather conditions. The system runs the full load of the petrol pump that includes 2 STP’s, 2 fans, canopy lights, office light load and automation equipment.

This installation was a success and Mr. Tickoo is very happy with the installation. We are hoping for a 70% reduction in his electricity bills. This month we will come to know of his first electricity bill after installing solar. Stay tuned, we will keep you updated about the same!
