Why this Solar Installer Always Uses Battery Management System for Off Grid Solar?

Have you heard the term ‘Battery Management System’? If you have inverter and batteries installed in your house or work place then battery management system is one thing you shouldn’t live without. When we come across a new product in the market, one often wonders ‘What is this product really about’ ‘Do I really need this?’ ‘What do other people say about this product?’ ‘Will it be worth my money?’etc. You will find answers to all these questions in this article.

Battery management system is a simple, compact and extremely useful product introduced by Su-Kam for the first time in India, that helps in greatly prolonging your battery life. If you have a battery bank, that is two or more than two batteries, then you must buy yourself a battery management system.

Mr. Kunwer Sachdev, Managing Director of Su-Kam Power Systems limited and his innovative research team came up with this brilliant idea, which became the perfect solution for the problematic decreasing life of batteries when connected in series and used as a battery bank.

In an off grid system that is a standalone solar system, the role of a battery bank is paramount. The batteries will store solar power in them and power your devices when required. The batteries used in such off grid systems are usually rated 12V.

Now suppose you have a battery bank of 4 batteries. Let us first understand what happens to these batteries without a battery management system. When these 4 batteries are charged some batteries get overcharged and some undercharged, there will be a slight mismatch in the beginning. That means some batteries charge till 14V while some remain at 13.7V.

With further cycles of charging and discharging this gap will increase. Slowly some will get extremely overcharged reaching a dangerous voltage level of 15V and some extremely undercharged. And then the battery manufacturer will advise you to buy a new battery.

By using BMS you can completely avoid this harmful situation. If you connect your 4 batteries with a battery management system it will ensure that all the batteries charge and discharge at the same voltage level. This will greatly increase your battery life and also saves the excess money you will spend on buying a new battery.

To understand in detail how a BMS works and how to connect it to your battery bank please see this video:

Soosi William stays in Joseph cottage tc 13/1146/2 in Trivandrum, Kerala and decided it was time for her and her family to switch to solar. They received a monthly electricity bill of Rs. 9000 before they installed a solar system. And so they called up Mr. Mohan Nair from Sun beam powers, Su-Kam’s loyal distrbuter in Kerala. Mr. Nair advised them to put up the following system –

  1. Su-Kam solar PCU – 2KVA
  2. Su-Kam solar panels 1.5KW(250W/24V) – 6 in number
  3. Su-kam batteries 48V- 150AH – 4 in number
  4. Battery Management System – One.

This was an off grid solar system completely functional on solar power. No power from mains was utilized to run load through this system. This was essentially because the family wanted to completely reduce their monthly electricity bill and because there was sufficient sunlight available in that area. The system generates approximately 6 units of electricity in a day and runs almost all the load at home except air conditioners.

Mr. Nair also advised Soosi Williams to install a battery management system with the 4 batteries to maintain their voltage level at all times. Mr. Nair says ‘The BMS works brilliantly; it equalizes the voltage of all batteries and will ensure that the health of the battery remains maintained. I have been checking the voltage of the batteries in various cycles and they get charged perfectly’.

He also said ’It is indeed an excellent product, from now on we will be advising all of our customers to buy BMS system with their battery bank that will maintain the health and life of the batteries’

We hope more and more customers realize the importance of BMS and make sure that they have one connected to their battery bank and see the difference. We wish Soosi Williams all the best.
